Foundations in Italy

The Committee, coordinated by Sergio Ristuccia and Andrea Zoppini, published a first White Paper in 2002, looking at the following topics:

  • Origins and recent developments of the foundation phenomenon in Italy,
  • Foundations, the legislative jungle and the figures involved,
  • Foundations at work,
  • Foundations and the taxman,
  • Foundations of banking origin, making the most of so-called “altruistic capital” accumulated in the country.

The Committee began a new session of works in September 2006, with the following programme:

  • Foundations and social legitimation – community foundations;
  • Drawing up of guidelines for funding and for ex post systems to evaluate granted funding;
  • Banking foundations as actors of the organisation of social freedoms;
  • The reform of Book I of the Civil Code;
  • The European Statute for Foundations and possible legislative reforms in other European countries, as well as the project – developed in recent years in Europe - to draw up a “European foundation” statute.
