The CSS study committee on Foundations in Italy, coordinated by Sergio Ristuccia, has published a White Paper at the end of an initial work phase. The monograph contains an overview of the various aspects of the "foundation" phenomenon and of possible interpretations; it also puts forward proposals and recommendations: in order to foment discussion founded on adequate cognitive bases and to reach useful conclusions in terms of public policies and science policy.

The publication of this White Paper has led to the next phase of the work, discussion both within the Committee and outside to examine and prepare further proposals, with the involvement of interested actors.
