Another chapter in the debate on secondary schools. The Consiglio italiano per le Scienze Sociali, thirty years after the publication of Scienze Sociali e riforma della scuola secondaria (Social Sciences and reform of the secondary school, Einaudi 1977), which also set out to seek a reform of the secondary school in Italy - then believed to be imminent - has devoted another study to this question. A great contribution to this study has been made by an active group of secondary school teachers who, in the years since the publication of the original book, have developed in an intelligent and creative manner innovative teaching methods in the area of Social Sciences, and analysed possible areas of interaction within a school context that has changed little at an institutional level. The result is a book that we believe to be useful in getting public opinion and educational heads, at all levels, to reopen the debate on the cultural contents of secondary schools within the framework of an approach that has given to schools and teacher colleges real organisational and didactic autonomy.
